Chris Hardtman's Biography & Artist Statement
A graduate of Fine Art from Carnegie Mellon University, Christine has worked in mediums including animation, illustration, web design, graphic design, and video. She currently resides in Manhattan and runs Hardtman LLC.
Christine's current Canalize series is composed of mixed media and graphite drawings that are at times representational and at others, abstract. Her gestural drawings are composed of layer upon layer of swirling marks with the result that we, the viewer see the ending with only traces of the drawing's journey. These traces hold our attention and give the drawings their unique character. This technique also adds emotion, tunneling deep into the psyche of the people she portrays.
Christine's abstract work can best be
described as thought patterns. Again we see the swirling biomorphic shapes that recur in her work, this time making their way onto the paper via a circuitous route through the artist's subconscious. She notes that the end result is best when it comes as a surprise, thus the most distant from her conscious self. This approach stems from her embrace of the basic premise of abstraction, a perception of the world as a dynamic interplay of patterns, shapes and movement.
